About Aging

Time to face it. We’re all aging. From the moment we’re conceived, really. Always getting older, one day at a time; one second at a time. We love it until we’re facing 30 (or so). What a shock it is for many of us when we turn 30!! (Other dates optional.) At least it was for me. 30, 50 and 70 were marker years for me. The others I took in stride. Don’t ask me why. I’ve got no answer for that one.

Once we hit the Magic “Geezer Quotient,” we’re faced with some decisions. Accept the calendar or pretend it doesn’t exist for us. Gaze sadly into the mirror every morning and declare that life as it was meant to be is over. Or make friends with our new definition of meaning and beauty.

Our attitude will make all the difference.

Research on aging and attitudes about “getting old” has had some surprises for us all. It turns out that there is such a thing as the “Happiness Curve” – demonstrating that the earlier and later years are deemed the happiest by a majority of people. At the “old” level of the spectrum, the 70’s are the second happiest decade. And the 80’s (would you believe?) are the happiest! Go figure.

It turns out that it is less our circumstances that determine what our old age will look like to us. It is the attitudes that we take toward those circumstances that makes of these years a time of real transformation and calm and resilience.

The foundation of the happiness that people claim for themselves in old age

lives in a mind and heart and spirit that is filled with gratitude.

It’s that simple.

Everything else flows from that. Including grace.

ATTITUDE AND GRATITUDE MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE.
